Directory to the best Hospitals and English Speaking Doctors in Mexico
Two Phoenix area physicians have compiled a comprehensive guide to safe travel in Mexico. The 480 page book went on sale in May of this year.
The Mexico Health & Safety Travel Guide (MedToGo, LLC, $1995.US.) was written by Dr. Robert H. Page and Dr. Curtis P. Page, a father-son team of physicians who own a bilingual family practice in Tempe, Arizona.
The book is a detailed guide to 200 English speaking, mostly board certified, physicians and credentialed hospitals in 40 popular vacations spots of Mexico. It includes information on preparation for Mexican travel, medications to have on hand during travel, medical translations, and when an how to seek the right physician or hospital for a specific illness or accident. There are also chapters on crime, safety and security; drug penalties and prescription information; and embassy, consulate and consular agency locations.
The two physicians, and Dr. Robert Page¹s son, Robert R. Page, a part time Mexican resident, spent the past three years researching the book, meeting and pre-screening physicians and hospital throughout Mexico. The authors personally met with each physician and hospital featured. None of the physicians or hospitals in the guide paid to be included.
The book provides valuable advice to non-spanish speaking travellers from around the world, including the million-plus North American retirees who live in Mexico. Business travellers, bridal couples, cruise ship passengers, spring breakers, and parents travelling with children can also benefit from information in the book, according to author Dr. Robert Page.
³We think travelling in Mexico should be worry-free,² said Dr. Page who vacations there frequently. ³Actually, we were amazed that such a book didn¹t already exist. Everyone we¹ve spoken with sees this guide a s a valuable resource for safe travel.²
He says the idea for Mexico health & Safety Travel Guide came to him years ago in Puerto Vallarta when he and another Arizona physician came upon a serious accident involving a college student vacationing from California.
³We stepped in to help because we spoke Spanish and had the necessary medical skills,² he said. ³It was evident to us after this experience that there was very little infrastructure to aid foreigners in a time of emergency. I was also obvious at the scene and the hospital how difficult it would have been to get expert medical care without knowing about the local doctors and hospitals. Not speaking the language is only part of the problem, it¹s also not knowing how to find the best physician and the best hospital in a crisis.²
Studies show that over 50% of travellers fall ill or have accidents while travelling in Mexico. The book deals with navigating the Mexican health care system and is also written to provide a safety net for those with significant medical problems such as kidney disease, COPD, heart problems, and cancer.
Many of the physicians in the book have interned or completed residencies in well-known hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Europe. The majority of those listed in the book are board-certified or the equivalent.
MedToGo, LLC, is the publishing firm established by the Page family. They plan to publish other regional and country guides and have established a website for Mexico travellers: medtogo.com
